How to choose a home tutor in Delhi NCR (a parent's checklist)

1. Ask for a diagnostic before a price

Any tutor who quotes a monthly fee before testing the student is guessing. A Class 9 student who is weak in algebra and a Class 9 student who is weak in geometry need completely different plans and different numbers of hours.

Insist on one assessment session — free or paid — and ask for the findings in writing. If nothing can be written down, nothing was diagnosed.

2. Check the subject, not the degree

A B.Tech degree does not mean someone can teach Class 7 fractions. Ask the tutor to explain one specific chapter your child is struggling with, out loud, in two minutes.

• Which boards have you taught — CBSE, ICSE, HBSE, UP Board?
• Which classes do you teach most often?
• Show me how you would explain this one chapter.
• How do you handle a student who is two years behind?

3. Fix the reporting rhythm in advance

The single biggest failure mode in home tuition is that months pass with no visible evidence. Agree before day one on what you will receive and how often — a weekly written note covering what was taught, what improved and what slipped is the minimum.

4. Verify identity and continuity

For at-home sessions, take an ID copy and a contact number that is not the tutor's only number. Ask what happens if the tutor is unavailable for two weeks — a replacement with no handover is worse than a missed month.

5. Warning signs

Walk away when you see any of these, regardless of the fee.

• No willingness to be assessed by you first
• Promises of a fixed percentage or rank
• Refuses to teach in a common room where you can hear
• No written plan, no written report, ever
• Pushes a long advance payment before a single session
